Please find information below about Commedia and Clowning Workshops coming up in Northland. The workshops are suitable for both drama teachers and keen students Year 11 and above.
Commedia dell’Arte is a form of improvisational comedy which started in the marketplaces of Italy over 400 years ago. It is a half mask tradition which has had a huge impact on all forms of modern comedy, theatre and dance and is therefore an invaluable training tool for developing performance skills.
This practical workshop explores the vocal and physical characteristics of the main Commedia characters, as well as looking at warm up activities, lazzi (stock comic routines) and canovacci (semi-improvised scenes) which teachers can use with their students.
Handouts are provided for both students and teachers, as well as a set of posters with detailed information on each character.
Lisa Brickell trained at the Jacques Lecoq Theatre School in Paris. She specialized in Clowning and Mask Work with Giovanni Fusetti at the Kiklos Theatre School in Padua, Italy and then completed Antonio Fava’s International Commedia dell’Arte workshop in Reggio Emilia, Italy. She also has a MA in Drama, and BA in Italian from Auckland University. She gave a key note speech on Commedia at The Drama NZ Conference in Christchurch in 2014 and has taught and performed extensively in New Zealand, Italy, Japan, Singapore, France, Brazil and England.

"My Year 11s had a terrific time with Lisa, as she expounded on the performance conventions of Commedia dell 'Arte, with enthusiasm, wit and clarity. It brought work, previously undertaken in class, into focus, and gave the students a terrific foundation from which to jump beyond themselves. I would highly recommend her workshops to other Drama colleagues."
