[Dramanet] Devising Workshop for Teachers with Massive Company

March 18, 2010
1:00 pmto6:00 pm

Massive Company’s acclaimed teacher’s Devising workshops return for 2010 – to register, or if you would like to know more, visit our website or contact Samscott@clear.net.nz

Campion College was privileged to have Sam Scott conduct a series of workshops for our Drama students in 2008 as part of the Artists in School programme (now sadly axed.) Sam was an inspirational facilitator – she encouraged the students to take risks, to think outside of what they normally thought of as theatre, to act physically, to make the ordinary extraordinary. In other words, to think and act “massive”.  The effect on their devised NCEA performances was very noticeable – the students had the increased confidence to experiment and to think of new and varied ways to tell stories. And I can still see the Massive influence in current work.  I’m also certain that the “Massive experience” with Sam was of benefit to the creation of the devised work of my two 2008 scholarship candidates, both of  whom achieved scholarship wins.”

Dr. Bronwyn Fenwick, TIC NCEA Drama, Campion College, Gisborne

Who Will Teach You: Samantha Scott (Sam). I am the Artistic Director and Founder of Massive Company. I have been teaching and directing young people for 25 years. I specialise in devising work with young people and have made many shows using this process. I have worked as a director/tutor for 25 years working in TV, film and theatre.

What Will You Learn: The Workshop is a practical one so you will be participating in everything and learning through doing. We will cover foundation skills and techniques that are the basis of ALL Massive Company work. This will include exercises in spontaneity, ensemble, focus and the connection between actors and audience. Then we will look at devising exercises which make material for making theatre pieces. You will leave the day with tangible exercises and techniques that you can immediately use back in the classroom.
